Worms and Viruses on Cellphones, watch out!!

With the advert of new technologies mobiles phones have gone high-tech, enabling us to utilise them in a widening variety of ways - including GPS navigation and the ability to surf the internet while on the move. However, with the growing popularity of ’smart phones’ for the purposes of internet connection and watching video clips, the security risks usually associated with internet users are becoming more apparent.

Attacks of viruses and worms on mobile phones are on the increase not only on the smart phones but on cheap phones too. Millions of mobile phones have been sold and according to experts, over 300 viruses out there waiting to take advantage of this surge in technology offerings. We are all aware that if we don’t have a virus checker on our computers then the likeliness of getting infected is high but have you ever given much thought to what damage a virus can do on your mobile phone?

The first virus materialized back in 2004; although it proved harmless it shown that it was a possibility. The worm spreading the virus was known as Cabir, infecting phones running the ever popular Symbian operating system. The virus began spreading via Bluetooth and text messages, instantly scanning for more phones to exploit when infected.

The effects of these worms and viruses can range from disabling phones and SIM cards to sneakily raising the costs of messages and phone calls. And with more of these handsets now becoming available as pay as you go mobile phones it can prove costly for those already on a tight budget.

Whilst the initial risk factor of the handset getting infected is relatively low, there have been reports of thousands of phones that have experienced problems. And according to a survey commissioned by a leading anti-virus software company - three out of four users expressed concerns over the safety of new mobile services.

Since it was discovered that operating systems on mobile phones were susceptible to viruses, firms have had to implement changes to try and bring the risk level down for their customers. And with the launch of the next generation of smart phones announced at the recent Mobile World Congress, there is concern about potential security risks for these new open-source mobile phones.

Security experts from leading security software firms are warning of risks associated with using open-source software, which could leave mobile phone customers’ handsets at risk of viruses and worms in much the same way as computer users face today.

So, what can we do to avoid picking up mobile phone viruses?

As mentioned above, the most popular way of spreading viruses it via the popular Bluetooth technology and although we cannot completely avoid infections, we should be suspicious of any file wanting to send itself to your phone.

Games for our mobile phones are also becoming popular, so a suggestion would be to ensure you’re downloading your games from reputable firm.

Many companies are developing ant-virus software and anticipate this market to grow the more we become able to customize our phones. It may be worth considering installing this software as a way to keep out unwanted infections.
