Palm Phone Glossary

Accessory
External hardware added to a palmOne device in order to add value or additional functionality – like a case for protection or a keyboard for rapid typing.

ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - A standard that allows a high data rate signal (6 megabits per second or more.) It has more bandwidth for downloading than uploading. VDSL technology can provide six times the bandwidth compared to typical technology which is being used today, (often ADSL.)

Access Control System
A security system for broadcasters so only those who have paid for, or will pay for iTV and other services, will get those services. The system is primarily made up of 2 parts: (1) signal scrambling, (2) encryption of electronic “keys” which the viewer will need.

Automatic Number Identification – (ANI)
This enables the subscriber to call in and order programming. Based on the caller’s phone number, the ANI links the caller’s account to his or her addressable set-top box and authorizes the transaction.

Alarm/Reminder
An audio, vibrating and/or visual (flashing LED or onscreen dialog box) reminder that you can set to announce an upcoming event or appointment scheduled in the Calendar or Tasks application.

Audio
The amount of data that can be sent through a particular point in a connection. It’s generally measured in bits per second (bps). The more bandwidth available, typically the greater amount of data that can be transferred per second.

  • The audible part of a transmitted signal; “they always raise the audio for commercials”
  • An audible acoustic wave frequency

Application Screen
The main screen on a palmOne device from which you can see and launch (start) any of the applications installed on the device. This view is activated by selecting the home icon/button, or by holding down the center of the navigator button

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology used to create PANs (Personal Area Networks) among your devices, and with other nearby devices.

Bluetooth allows you to leave your phone in your pocket, while talking on your phone with a Bluetooth headset - with no wires. You can also exchange contact or scheduling information with other Bluetooth-enabled phones nearby, or send such information to a nearby Bluetooth-enabled printer.

Another common use is to give your laptop computer or PDA wireless high-speed Internet access via Bluetooth and your phone.

Band width
The amount of data that can be sent through a particular point in a connection. It’s generally measured in bits per second (bps). The more bandwidth available, typically the greater amount of data that can be transferred per second. A full page of English text is about 16,000 bits. Bandwidth can also be thought of as the information-carrying capability of a particular television channel.

Baseband Transmission
A type of digital data transmission in which each medium (wire) carries only one signal, or channel, at a time. In contrast, broadband transmission enables a single wire to carry multiple signals at the same time.
Most communications involving computers uses baseband transmission. This includes communications from the computer to devices (printers, monitors, and so on), but communication via modems using broadband is increasing quite steadily.

Cable telephony
Having the ability to also use the telephone over your cable connection as well as for the normal Internet and television uses.

CDMA
Code-Division Multiple Access.

CDMA is a digital wireless technology. It is a general type of technology, implemented in many specific technologies. But the term “CDMA” is also commonly used to refer to one specific implementation: IS-95 - a mobile-phone technology that competes with technologies such as GSM.

Cell Phone Amplifier
A cell phone amplifier is a surefire means of ensuring that you can hear the person on the other end of the phone. If you are always working in a busy environment or on your cell phone with other people around,

Custom Ringtones
This means that the phone has selectable ringtones that can be set to a custom melody (or “ringer”) that you can change to something other than the ringtones included with the phone.

Some phones include a built-in “composer” that let you enter the notes manually and create your own ringtone right on the phone.

Others require that the ringtone be created elsewhere and downloaded to your phone via special SMS, EMS, or MMS messages, or via Wireless Internet. Ringtones can also sometimes be transferred in the form of a file from another device, such as a phone, PDA, or PC, via a cable, infrared, or Bluetooth.

Digital Transmission
Transmission of video, voice and other data that first was encoded into binary values and then transmitted as electrical pulses.

Dial-Up Networking
DUN is a Bluetooth profile (mode) that is designed to link an Internet-enabled device such as mobile phone to a device such as a laptop or PDA so it can access the Internet.

DUN will therefore allow you to connect you Bluetooth-enabled laptop to the Internet via your Bluetooth-enabled phone and wireless service. Because it works over Bluetooth, the link is wireless, so there is no cable; you can leave your phone in your pocket or purse.

Data Encoding
The method by which certain communication devices (such as a modem) encode digital data onto an analog signal for transmission. Telephone line communications are typically analog but computers create digital data (not analog) thus computers need to turn the telephone digital data into analog data before it can be transmitted over phone lines. A converter mechanism is necessary for computer data to be transported over phone lines. The most popular of these “converter mechanisms” is a modem.

Digital Media Platform
(DMP) –A digitized platform for media that allows real-time and/or delayed delivery of video, audio and/or data to multiple networks such as telco, cable, satellite, digital terrestrial broadcasting and broadband. Delivery can be made via a variety of devices possibly including mobile phones, set-top boxes, PDAs and computers. Often the content can be produced generically, eliminating the need for platform-specific content production tools.

Digital Animation Recorder
A standalone device or computer card that’s able to record and play back video in real time.

Data Communications Equipment
DCE - A communications device that can establish, maintain, and terminate a connection (for example a telephone or set-top box.)

Data Stream
All the data transmitted through a particular communication line for a particular program, operation or scheduled transmission.

Expansion Card
Expansion cards can be used to add memory or features to a phone. Extra memory can be used to store and transfer photos, videos, music, computer files, or backups of phone data such as the phone book and calendar.

Fixed Wireless Service – (Fixed Wireless Service Providers, {FWSPs}, Broadband Fixed Wireless Access {BWA}) - Fixed Wireless Service often uses Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System (MMDS), that may operate in the 2.5 GHz to 2.7 GHz range and can support up to 10M bit/sec. It’s an alternative type of high speed Internet access. An outdoor flat-panel antenna, a wireless modem perhaps consisting of a low-cost, 802.11b PCMCIA radio card and a specified computing platform are possible requirements depending on the provider.

Global System for Mobile Communications
The digital cellular telephone standard. It is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. GSM service is used by over 1.5 billion people across more than 210 countries and territories . The ubiquity of the GSM standard makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM is an open standard which is currently developed by the 3GPP.

From the point of view of the consumer, the key advantage of GSM systems has been higher digital voice quality and low cost alternatives to making calls such as text messaging. The advantage for network operators has been the ability to deploy equipment from different vendors because the open standard allows easy inter-operability.

GSM : Global System for Mobile Communication

  • IS-136
  • GEM
Globally Executable MHP- The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the DVB decided upon a new international Application Programming Interface (API) for middleware between (1) the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP), which is an ITV middleware software layer for US cable

    Handset
A remote control device, very possible wireless, used in this case to interact with your TV.

    Mobile Interactive TV
Mobile-phone iTV Applications - Advanced iTV platforms that enable end-users to interact with programming via SMS and MMS. This can include receiving, processing and presentation of SMS messages, dynamic voting, voting on what should be the next video clip or even commercial. The aim is to extend the range of interactive services. A single platform at the broadcaster’s premises can allow for the realization of numerous applications, enabling integration of games or TV formats of third party providers by means of interfaces.

    Narrowband
A data transmission system that has a small bandwidth and thus can carry only limited amounts of information. It can also mean a transmission medium or channel with a single voice channel. Traditional copper telephone lines (POTS) with standard switching devices and other telephone hardware, are often narrowband

    Personal Communications Network
PCN - Wireless telephone concept like conventional cellular telephone, but designed in a way to reduce the cost of handsets, and provide more flexible services.

    Telemedicine
Telecommunications application for the remote provision of medical services or the exchange of medical information, including video, audio, images, and data. Demonstrated uses of telemedicine include remote consultation and rapid access to medical records

    Telephony
The science of converting sound such as voice, to electrical signals and transmitting it via copper wire, fiber optics, radio waves, etc. It may also used to describe voice/data integration on computer networks.

    Satellite Cell Phone
These phones debuted a few years back, and many people did not take them seriously. When these phones first came out, they lacked the range and roaming capabilities of the traditional cell phone that got its feed from local towers.

Unified Messaging Service – (May be known as Multimedia Messaging Service) - Allows you to listen and respond to all your email messages with any phone or computer anytime, anywhere. The service also allows you to access your personal contact list, calendar, etc. Outbound calls may be possible through your Unified Messaging Service account. This service can also include voice mail.

    Video Dial Tone
